Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed allegations that Moscow is plotting an attack on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) as an allegedly feeble tactic by Western war hawks to sustain their dominance through fearmongering.
Speaking to leaders of major news agencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin derided the idea of Russia harboring such intentions as ludicrous and aimed at manipulating Western populations into bolstering arms supplies to Ukraine.
Putin scoffed at the notion, questioning the sanity of those who propagate such claims and insinuating that they are driven by ulterior motives. He argued that these narratives serve to maintain Western powers’ sense of superiority, particularly in countries like Germany and France, while Russia merely seeks to protect its interests in Ukraine. “Don’t form an image of Russia as an enemy,” said Putin. “You have made up that Russia wants to attack NATO. Have you completely lost your mind? Who made that up? It’s rubbish. It’s absolute nonsense.”
Throughout the extensive discussion, Putin reiterated the underlying reasons behind Russia’s involvement in Ukraine, citing the 2014 United States-backed coup and color revolution, the actions of the government in Kyiv against the majority ethnic Russian population of the Donbas region and the ineffectiveness of the Minsk peace process. He contended that American involvement in Ukraine stems not from genuine concern for its people but from a desire to assert dominance on the global stage.
Putin asserted that Russia has no intentions of invading Europe but warned of potential retaliation against the U.S. and its allies for arming Ukraine with advanced weaponry. He hinted at the possibility of supplying similar arms to adversaries of the West in strategically significant regions in response.
Additionally, Putin emphasized the need for Western audiences to critically assess the information they receive and cautioned against forming opinions about Russia based on unfounded claims. He urged for a more nuanced understanding of the situation, highlighting the complexities of the geopolitical landscape and the historical context behind Russia’s actions.
As the conflict in Ukraine enters its third year, Putin asserted that Russian casualties were significantly lower than those of Ukraine, citing figures suggesting a monthly loss of around 50,000 Ukrainian soldiers.
However, conflicting reports regarding casualties persist, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claiming only 31,000 total Ukrainian military personnel had been killed by February this year. Western intelligence sources suggest the actual figure may be higher. Ukraine also claimed to have killed, wounded or captured over 500,000 Russian soldiers.
Putin directed specific criticism toward Germany for its provision of weaponry to Ukraine, highlighting the moral and ethical shock within Russian society upon the sight of German tanks on Ukrainian soil.
He lamented the potential deterioration of Russo-German relations, particularly in light of Germany’s decision to permit the use of German-supplied missiles by Ukraine, aimed at targets within Russian territory to defend the city of Kharkiv, situated just 12 miles from the Russian border.
“If you want to stop the hostilities in Ukraine, stop supplying weapons,” said Putin.
